| We are still ....
Deciding what we are going to be sending out and where we will be sending it out to... But we have figured out a general checkpoint |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| or rest stop routine that we will be testing out as training progresses...
So here it is in all it's glory! For sure it will need to be revised as the season moves along and the dogs performance shows us how we will have to change our race plan.... and from there how we will need to alter our food drop preperations and checkpoint routines....... |

| With this plan I will have a total of 2 1/2 hrs of chores to do at each rest stop... if everything runs smooth (which it most certainly won't, not every time anyway!) then I get, for a 6hr layover, 3 1/2 hrs sleep (or less)... which for a 2 run cycle (24hrs) gives me +/- 7hrs sleep. Not too bad! | ![]() |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| But, with the shorter runs (and thus shorter rests... checkout the Race Plan) any problems in the above checkpoint routine will considerably shorten the amount of sleep I get... One of my own personal weaknesses, that I worry about for this race, is making good decisions when I am very tired...So I have tried (and will work on throughout training) to set the team up to do longer runs, and thus we will have longer single periods of rest and I will get longer periods of sleep. As you can see in our race plan, many of our runs will be 9-11 hrs long which should give me rest (sleep) periods of 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 hrs. This seems as though it will work well with my dogs... who aren't real fast but do have great endurance...... It seems folks keep their runs shorter to keep their speeds up... but since I am only training to go 8 mph where others are aiming for 10, 11, 12, 13 mph, keeping speed up doesn't seem as important to me... where getting good long rests and making smarter, less impared desicions seems more important....overall saving us more time than keeping up a 1 or 2 mph bonus in speed........we'll see! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| We will most likely be sending out kibble to every checkpoint and then 3 different types of meat product and 3 different types of fat, as well. How much, and exactly which kind of food will go where is still up for grabs.
As a general starting point we will mix kibble, meat, and fat into warm water and then serve it as slop to the dogs at the start and end of each rest cycle. Then on the trail we will feed a snack every 2 hours of running time...just a quick bite to keep the dogs hydrated and energized. The 1st two hour snack will likely be a meat snack, the second a kibble/meat/fat "glop." Then, that pattern will be repeated every two hours for the length of the run. All this will be adjusted based on how the dogs are looking and eating, the trail conditions, and the temperature. |
